Heather & Michael

Exploring the Heart of Playa Del Carmen: Ruins, the Beach & 5th Avenue

Heather and Michael were a fantastic couple from Texas that we had the pleasure of photographing early June for what was being hyped up (and thankfully delivered too), the vacation of a lifetime. As a couple who married young, and had children during those younger years, they never even took the opportunity to enjoy a honeymoon together, let alone take any other sort of vacation. So needless to say, Heather was absolutely thrilled to finally have the opportunity to kick back and relax solo with her husband. And she couldn’t think of any better way to preserve all those memories, than by having an intimate couple’s session as a surprise gift for both of them. Staying at The Royal in the heart of downtown Playa del Carmen, which meant travelling was minimal and an outfit change was completely plausible. Our initial date wound up having far too much rain and bad weather to want to proceed forward with the outdoor shoot, so it was rescheduled to a different day. This freed up the opportunity for them to stroll over to meet us at some Mayan Ruins that have been preserved in town. From here, we slowly made our way to the beach to snap a few photos in that environment, despite the unfortunately excessive sargassum seaweed and angry looking storm clouds. We made sure to take our time, which helped loosen Michael up in front of the camera, considering this was still coming with little warning.

Once done strolling along the beach, we made time for that outfit Heather had requested prior to the date, that she felt better represented them as a couple, a comfortable, dressed down relaxed jeans and cowboy boots look. We made our way weaving through crowds of people along 5th avenue, towards a small little tapas bar we love here in Playa del Carme, Sala Rosa. Ordering drinks, we alternated between photographing intimate moments where the two of them had a chance to rekindle their love, and other times that included all 4 of us enjoying beverages as the sun set and the ambiance of the venue really took off. The countless lights running across boards and up trees, keeps this lounge busy and full, despite being off the beaten path a bit. You need to travel a number of blocks before ending up at Sala Rosa, but it’s completely worth the effort. And Heather and Michael could not have looked cuter in the environment. As the light from the lit candles flicked across Heather’s face, she just stared lovingly into Michael’s eyes, as he returned the exact same gaze of unremarkable love and awe. These two truly deserved this vacation of their dreams, and we were thrilled to play an integral part in preserving these memories of theirs.
