So We Have Finally Arrived!

  • July 18, 2014

So we have finally arrived! Playa del Carmen is now called home. It has been an exceptionally busy few days. Lots of changes and lots to learn. After arriving Sunday, we were met with the misfortune of having our luggage lost in transit at the airport in Toronto. We had the exceptionally fortunate experience of having an exceptionally kind gentleman by the name of Miguel, help take down our information and keep in contact with us until it was found Tuesday and delivered Wednesday. That being said, the first few days with no change of clothes, or anything else, was challenging. We’ve learned that we are approximately 5km from the outskirts of town, but nearly 8km away from Walmart, which is where we needed to go to get simple replacement items. Needless to say, in this heat and humidity, it can feel like quite the trek. We were so relieved when we received notice that our luggage was found Tuesday evening, and would be delivered sometime Wednesday.

Luggage situation aside, we are quickly learning that being completely foreign, and lacking Spanish speaking skills, proves to be very difficult. We are trying to pick up on words here and there, but that is going to continue to be a work in progress for quite some time still. Things are done very differently here, and we are learning new things not only daily, but nearly every hour, or so it seems. But, it’s all a learning experience, and we’ve remained positive and excited the whole way through. Bring on the challenges of living in Mexico!

We love our new place, and it turns out this condo is HUGE! The two rooms are basically the exact same size, never mind the vast openness of the living room/dining area. We have adjusted to the gas stove top, and just learned today that our washer/dryer system will likely also run on gas rather than electricity. We’re not certain, but this is the norm here, so it’s exceptionally likely to be the case for us too. There’s still a number of items needed to make this place feel a bit more like home, but that will come over time. Patience truly is a virtue.

We are excited to continue onward with obtaining our immigration cards and being fully entitled to work here. It has been proceeding rather steadily, with a day trip to Toronto July 11th to sign for our Mexican Visa and now, meeting with our lawyer here in Playa del Carmen to continue filling out applications for the card proceed to be complete. One slow and steady step at a time.

The beach is just over half an hour away from the entrance to our complex, and likely just shy of one kilometre away from our front steps. Needless to say, this is heavenly and we’ve enjoyed our splashes and milling about in the ocean nearly every day. The sun is hot, the air is humid, and the water is warm yet still refreshing. It feels great to finally be here, and despite always having things to do, we still take time to sit back and remember where we are, what we have accomplished thus far to get here, and give each other random high fives for doing it. If you couldn’t tell from this post that we’re ecstatic to be here, the photo should sum that up nicely.

La vida es bella!

Website Migration Complete!

Hi Everyone!

Just wanting to say that we completed our website migration over to our new hosting package. Still with Godaddy, they’ve always given us great customer service and a great price.

It’s been a hectic and exciting couple of days. We’ve started selling a lot of our things in preparation for our move in a couple weeks. If everything goes as planned we’ll be sitting in an empty living room with just a couple of fold out chairs and the laptop.

The photos from our engagement session with Benny & Karen should be all finished very soon. Matt just has to finalize a few edits before we post. We’ll share one with you all now.

This Sunday we have a session with Connie and her partner Paquito at the Quai de l’Horloge in Montreal’s Old Port. We’re really excited for this, the photos are going to look amazing!

That’s all for now, keep posted for more photos coming soon!

Hi Everyone!

We’ve been super busy planning our big move to mexico in less than 3 months. Not only are we flying down, we’re also driving home from Montreal to Winnipeg over a 3 day period before our flight on the 13th of July.

Two Fridays ago we had a great anniversary session with Ashley & Phil who were the winners of our first ever engagement / couple’s session contest. The photos look beautiful and they will be up and posted very soon.

We’re still booking sessions and weddings up until we leave Montreal at the end of June so if you’re interested please send us a message.

Condo in Mexico

Very Exciting Times!

As you can tell by the title, both myself and Jasmin are exceptionally excited at the moment. We’ve been working hard and planning our big move down to Playa del Carmen since August 2013 and just this week we solidified where we’ll be staying for our first six months in Mexico. We’ve been in contact with a wonderful couple from our home province of Manitoba who are renting us their condo. It’s about 4km outside of the city center and about 1/2km from the beach. A beautiful two bedroom with lots of room for us and the cats (Princess & Sushi) We’ll make sure to post lots of photos once we arrive mid July.

We’ve also started the process of registering our business in Mexico, which should be a very interesting learning experience. We’re working with a wonderful Lawyer Gisela, from http://www.cozumellawyer.com. We’ll keep everyone posted as the process continues.

Also, we’ve begun looking into booking our flights and getting everything underway for traveling with the two cats. We need to get special kennels for the cats so they can fly with us and they’ll be sitting under the seats in front of us. I’m sure that will be interesting. Sushi in particular likes to make a lot of noise when traveling. When we originally drove from Winnipeg to Montreal 4 years ago she meowed non stop for the whole first day of driving.

Other than that we’re busy booking work and meeting with couples here in Montreal to do local engagement photo sessions. Who knows, we might even end up booking a wedding here in Montreal before we leave in 3 months. We’re meeting with Ashley and her partner, our first contest winner next Saturday so expect new photos within the next couple of weeks.

Jasmin is out of town this weekend in Toronto for a convention so it’s just me and the cats at home. I’m going to take some time to relax and enjoy myself. As each day passes we get closer and closer to the big move and we can’t help but smile.

Cake & other things…

Just a few small things. We’ve consolidated our information section of the website so now our menu lists “info” and through there you can find our frequently asked questions, booking and cancellation policies, Mayan Riviera weather and sitemap pages. Hopefully this will make finding information just a little easier.

In other news, Michelle Dion, our first contest winner has passed on the prize to her sister Ashley. We can’t wait to start planning our photo session with her and hopefully with the weather getting nicer here in Montreal we can get together as soon as possible.

Other than that, Jasmin is currently in Winnipeg for some family business and I’ll be picking her up from the airport this Saturday. We are getting closer and closer to our big move date. So many things to think of, to do and to plan. It’s crunch time and every day brings more and more excitement. We’ll make sure to update everyone each step of the way on our amazing adventure!

Alright, finally down to cake. I’ve been thinking about cake a lot lately and I’m starting to think that maybe we should throw a little cake contest. If we can get enough people interested it would be a lot of fun to throw a contest that somehow involves cakes, maybe the prize will be cake, or at least a gift certificate for a cake/cupcake store. I guess we’ll just see how many people are interested.

Keep posted for photos with Ashley and her partner and cake.

MMmmmm cake….

Quick Update – Edits

So far, the week has been progressing wonderfully. We spent many hours going through all the photos from Christine & Jean-Seb’s wedding, and they are looking spectacular!  We eagerly anticipate posting a few teasers in the upcoming days. And we are working hard to have the entirety of the set edited and ready for viewing, by mid-September. On the heels of that set will be the wedding we are shooting this upcoming weekend!

On that note, we are thrilled to announce that tomorrow, Saturday August 31st, we will be spending the day with Moon Guan Yue Ting and Andrew Pang Chun Wai. We will be photographing the ceremony in the gorgeous St-James United Church in downtown Montreal, followed by a shoot in the beautiful Old Port of Montreal. The evening will wrap nicely with a reception, including traditional tea ceremony, in Chinatown.
